The second batch: Poems from Todo Tamayo!

Another fun event! We loved hanging out with high school students and their teachers at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on Monday. If you ever get a chance to participate, grab it! So many cool activities to participate in. We got fabulous lines and poems. We will post 2-3 per day, so come back often!

Light Shines Through

Pineapples, strawberries and watermelons make me hungry
Hark, hark, the lark
Its like an explosion around the corner
Light shines though darkness grows
Hug the unhugged
Give, grow, grant grace.

Leave them Speechless

Mouthfuls of shadows curtain your mind
Silver moon hits the sapphire water
When clocks seem to draw themselves
Leave them speechless with your passion
Then it explodes
And so the flower blooms

Your Light

Finding love in deep shades of red
Those empty souls wait for the light of the hearts
She didn't know how to ask
What you see is not the only way to feel
Be present
Only shadows surround me
until your light comes my way.

Free Worship

Do I love God?
In a sad spring garden I worship eternity
People are staring
Please let me be where I am free
Ocean, mountains, walks--happiness!
And it was bliss...

Not a Tragedy At All

A town of bricks and white walls and blue sky.
Music becomes visible on the walls.
Lovely dirt footprints outlined on the road
And to the left was such a tragedy
as never prior seen
Enveloped by the infinite constellations,
I sat.
Our love will last until the stars fade

Pessimism

Happy is the smile that knows nothing
Smile now, cry later
Salt water cleanses and heals
Eight huge worlds in a tiny room
grotesque paintings of love
Darkness is inevitable.

I am That

Rich colors--vibrant like Mexico
I am the nina bonita
You are that, I am that, and all of this is that!
Bright, smiling smiles
Passing by unreal faces of lost teenagers
I create my florescent future

Becoming Art

Juicy watermelon drips through my finger tips
The earth shakes it off like a wet dog
Penguins huddle for warmth, against the darkness of winter
Time lines become art and vice versa
My crazy life

Those are all the poems for now. We've still got strips waiting in the bowl to come out and play at our next event on April 28th!

Community Poetry Game Poems: The First Set is IN!

We had a fabulous time at our first event, April's First Thursday. Our bowl is overflowing with wonderful lines for poems!

We'll post 2 or 3 poems a day all through the month. If you want to see the poem your line ended up in, email us and we'll put it up sooner rather than later.

The Only Love

The waves crash and crash against the weathered rock
Blue purple sky under my pillow
The palm sways in the breeze
Your love is the only love
Each breath is my souls refreshment

Radiant, Crazy Beauty

The streets are filled with radiant beauty
The striped growl crouches in the grass
Crazy people stand beside me
Where are you right now?
My friend my mind is everywhere!
...and I am just right here
Life is jamming-Grab a brush
The sky is your limit

The Gift

Blue, teal, blue-how can beauty be named
Picasso drew a horse
My sister is small and dear to my heart
The wind is cool and it makes the leaves dance
The gift comes across the skies on a cloud
Sit and stay! Friend follow your nose

A Magical Encounter

what to be said about mice,
the magnificent slice of delectable importance
energy in the air without compare
I met an ancient dark woman in a train station
who said I would marry you.
Can you believe the magic?
A bright sun breaks through and warms my soul.

My Life

My mind is not focused for poetry
Abstract minimalism was out in the 70's
I gave my love a handful of cherry blossoms
the beauty of nature and appreciation for creatures
i dream of him under the dogwood tree, eyes glistening
My life is one big poem!

It's All Good

you got the right key, but the wrong key hole!
The scent of history fills my nostrils
and the moonlight danced with them
The company of friends on a fickle weather day
Today we can all make a difference.
It's all good.

Long Journey

You are all that you are, unless you aren't...
then I don't know
You are the perfect person,
don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Hair blowing in the breeze, she turned and smiled,
long journey to Santa Barbara filled with laughter,
the sky is beautiful, the sun is shining
and the stars are there in the sky.
Do you see it because I do?

Oh, the Ease

music filled the streets, summer was in the air.
I see trees
I feel the breeze, oh the ease of a beautiful
Santa Barbara evening!
the coyotes howled all night
and in the morning, we knew in wild nature
all was right
Together as one we make a new beginning

Appreciate the Beauty

Strips of poetry
Just a few words can be as hard to write as a novel!
The blue changed from deep to cerulean in a moth's breath
Tears slipping down her cheeks,
she took in all of the beauty she could handle.
The God has given use sight and vision to appreciate
the beauty of how kids should succeed.

Art is All Around

a bike was going and crashed into a tree
Art is all around you, listen you will see
Pale thoughts in the wide sky,
and your heart in my blue eyes
god helps people but he sometimes never helps
When the sky falls down and the moon turns to gold
Daring red branches model their spring leaves.

The Muse Calls

Sun shine in the sky
Each new dawn is a gift within itself
Rain falls in the sky from clouds
I see peace and love
Sun and blue sky
The muse calls from the far side of Anacapa

Filled with Love

Education of the heart cannot stop with the mind,
but begins with love
green eyes peering imperceptibly taking it all in
Love, love, putrid love; edges windows gleam
A leap of happiness, Joy and love, not faith alone.
Friendly people surround me.
The beauty of the air fills me up with love

Everything in this Life

Pink Paseo under hot dense clouds.
Big purple fishes drink deeply.
The marquee tells us what comes and goes
As above, so below, the ground the sky, the highs the lows
Everything in this life is a prize

We are Only Here...

Cars are fast but bikes are slow
I see cars rumbling with laughter
No matter what, we are only here today.
Night time falls it all gets dark people go to bed
Peace and love is all we need.
Let's remember God and all plant the seed.
Words words words; put your beauty into words

I Am Telling You This

Brown, you are the color of what I most want
You are beautiful, I am telling you this
so you have no excuses.
One day, one sad person said to God
...And I loved her and said "yes"
wind calls from the south
Why not now?

Honesty

Nervously facing down the expectant crowd
give them nothing; take from them, Everything
Insist on honesty
When the art of today is still seen tomorrow--
she used to love him
but then

Nights Pass

The angry rattle of a motorcycle bounces off walls.
Who am I and why am I here?
Nights pass like a blur like the headlights up and down state
amidst a storm of Thursday night conversation
and expectations, an anchor of quietude.
The time when I need you most,
you were not there.

Walking on Water

When I sing I feel as I am walking on water
lights are brightening my smile
It surrounds you and you hear and you feel it and you see it
One whispy echo on the wind, I dreamed I dreamt it.
Between the whale bones sunlight startles again
it is a sepia twilight day

I am You

Smile with me with blind joyous lips.
Soft twilight caresses a bustling street
The golden sky catches my eye.
Cool white mist swirls around the dark gate
Sometimes is now
Give me love, Give me love...I am love, I am you.

Please note: If you wrote more than one line on your strip, we may have used our discretion and shortened your contribution. These are all the poems from the first batch. If you don't see your line, it is waiting patiently in our bowl to mingle with other strips at the next event on the 16th. We'll start posting the next batch soon!

what is the community poetry game anyway?

The community poetry game is something we've invented. It is based on a Surrealist game called the exquisite corpse. Everyone is invited to contribute as many lines of poetry as they like. Each line is written on a separate strip, which we provide. We then put the strips in a basket and when we have enough of them, a "guest editor" is invited to pick six strips at random and then arrange them into a poem, which is stapeled on to a larger sheet. You might think that a poem created in this way could not possibly make sense, but in our experience, they often make perfect "poetic" sense.

During Poetry Month, we will be playing the game in three locations. (See post below for specifics.) We will collect lines from each location to use at the other two. This means that the game will be played by the entire community, not just by the community that shows up at a single event.

Please stop by and say hello, contribute lines, and read the poems.

Or you can play the online version, below. Simply submit your line as a comment to this post and we will print it out and include it in one of the poems. Please no lines longer than 15 words. Please also remember that this is a game for all ages and choose your language and subject matter appropriately.
